B.C. man, 88, lost $450,000 to fake Carney investment video
Ralph Moore of Qualicum Beach lost $450,000 over 10 months to an investment scam that started with a deepfake video of Prime Minister Mark Carney. TD questioned some of his transfers and briefly restricted his account but has not reimbursed him, and CBC's Go Public found similar cases at Scotiabank, RBC, and BMO. Ottawa has not committed to making banks cover fraud losses, though a Leger poll found 87 percent of Canadians think they should.
What to do: No prime minister or celebrity promotes investment platforms in online videos. Show the people you love what these fakes look like before they see one alone.
